Chapultepec Park Mexico Is Regarded As the Lungs of Mexico

September 22, 2015

The next destination in our list was what is commonly known as Bosque de Chapultepec or the Chapultepec Park. It is considered to be one of the biggest parks in this part of the world and is spread over an area of 686 hectares. The main base for the park is served by a rock formation known as Chapultepec Hill.

We came to know that park has been established mainly for serving as an ecological space in what can otherwise be termed as a vast megalopolis. It has been developed to make sure that there are enough trees to act as the city’s lungs and replenish the oxygen for the Valley of Mexico.

The park was inhabited and used as a social site from the pre-Columbian age. It was also used as a retreat for rulers of Aztec empire. During the colonial period, the Chapultepec Castle was constructed. Finally, the castle was used for serving as the official home of the heads of state of Mexico till 1940.

The official residence was then shifted to Los Pinos which is another portion of the same park. In its present form, the Chapultepec Park Mexico is divided in three major sections. The first section is considered to be the oldest and attracts maximum number of tourists.

However, it was the second section which left me mesmerized. It is made up of the main attractions of the park and these included the Museum of Anthropology, a zoo, Rufino Tamayo Museum, etc. One of the members of the park told us that around 15 million visitors come to the park every year. In order to take care of the large number of people frequenting the park, it had to undergo significant e-habilitation efforts during the period between 2005 and 2010.

The Chapultepec Park Mexico is also considered to be amongst the greatest urban parks of the world, besides Imperial Gardens from Tokyo, Central Park from New York City and Bois de Boulogne from Paris. We came to know that the term Chapultepec literally stands for the grasshopper hill and represents the large rocj formation in the middle of the first section of the park.
