Museum Of Science of Industry - A Worthy Visit

April 4, 2015

The Museum of Science and Industry in Chicago is the largest science museum in the western world. It is by far the largest in the United States and it is the second most popular in Illinois. The city of Chicago has been an industrial hub since the era of Industrial revolution. In post independence United States it has been a leading player in the scientific and industrial development of the nation.

The Museum of Science and Industry is a celebration of the large leaps mankind has made in the sphere of engineering and science in just a couple of centuries of the industrial revolution.

The museum is has over 2000 different permanent exhibitions and many more keep coming up and down depending upon public demand and recurring themes. The museum is located close to the Hyde Park, in the Jackson Park, between the University of Chicago and the mighty Lake Michigan.

The most illustrious possessions of the Museum have to be the two German submarines captured during the World War II. Once we got close to submarines we could almost listen the rattling of its turbines and feel the heated conversations that would have gone on in the submarine fathoms below the water.

The bituminous coal mine exhibition is extremely popular amongst visitors. We also went to see the exhibition and were thrilled to see how difficult it is to actually work inside a shaft for long hours. My favourite exhibit was the Great Train Story which is spread across an expanse of 3500 square foot. It had trains from all days and ages, even an 1834 built steam engine. We then went on to see the Apollo 8 aircraft which took 3 NASA astronauts including Jim Lovell to the moon. The module has been so fantastically preserved that it seemed like we could ride it and shoot off to the moon.

The Fab Lab MSI is a unique facility at the Museum of Science and Industry which allows you to build your own machines from the scratch. My friends and I had hours of fun there, exploring our curiosities and looking at some ingenious inventions that were put up.
